The Road - Short Screenplay.

By Emma-Conner

FADE IN:

EXT. ROAD - SUBURBS - DAY.

A quiet neighbourhood of neat little houses and white picket fences.

We focus on a BOY - JACOB, approx nine-years-old - sitting on the curb at the side of the road. He is SOBBING.

INT. LIVING ROOM - RACHEL'S HOUSE - DAY.

RACHEL, 18, is standing at the window. Although Jacob's back is to her, the way his shoulder hitch tells her that he is crying.

HEAVY FOOTSTEPS stomping down the stairs. She turns, irritated by the sound.

The front OPENS, SLAMS shut.

A moment later: A car engine REVVING aggressively in the driveway.

RACHEL

(mutter)

Asshole.

EXT. ROAD - SUBURBS - DAY.

Jacob looks up, alarmed, as the car SCREECHES past him. A few stray tears trickle down his face.

In the b.g. we see the door to Rachel's house open again, followed by the sound of approaching FOOTSTEPS.

Jacob turns his attention to the pavement, hoping that whoever this is will walk on by.

They don't.

RACHEL (O.S.)

Hey.

He continues to stare at the ground.

RACHEL (O.S.)

May I join you?

Jacob shrugs.

She takes that as a yes and sits beside him. Jacob continues to ignore her.

RACHEL

(clears throat)

Are you okay?

JACOB

What d'you care?

RACHEL

Just wondering.

A beat.

JACOB

D'you know that guy?

RACHEL

The one who just went by in the car?

JACOB

Yeah, him.

RACHEL

He's my husband.

JACOB

(shrewd)

He's mad at you.

RACHEL

Good guess.

JACOB

Wasn't a guess.

Rachel reconsiders him - he's much sharper than she gave him credit for.

Jacob finally lifts his head and regards her: she looks much older than eighteen.

JACOB

You'll be okay.

He lowers his head once more, this time out of embarrassment.

RACHEL

You take care, kid.

She stands.

JACOB

Jacob.

RACHEL

Huh?

JACOB

My name. It's Jacob.

RACHEL

Oh.

(beat)

I'm Rachel.

Silence from Jacob.

She turns and heads back to her house. When she reaches the front door, she glances back to the road.

Jacob is gone.

FADE TO BLACK.

END.
