She jumped up and looked around the room, but it was far too dark to see anything.

Her eyes adjusted to the darkness and she froze in terror as she noticed the closet door was ajar.

“Who’s there?” the little girl inquired.

Crreeaakk… the door opened even further.

“Hello? Is someone there?” she pressed.

There was no answer, but she noticed a tiny hand reaching out from behind the door.

“Please don’t hurt me. I’m only a little girl and am very much afraid,” the girl said.

The door creaked again, but this time a voice came from the darkness.

“Come closer young one, for I am old and cannot get out from behind this door,” the voice said.

The girl jumped down from her bed, but was hesitant to move any further.

“How do I know you won’t…” she gulped, “eat me?”

“I promise, for I do not eat children,” it replied. “Please help me from behind this heavy door, and I will tell you a secret.”

This intrigued the little girl who longed more than anything to be entrusted with another’s secret.

She walked over to the closet door and slowly pulled the doorknob toward her, widening the entrance to the darkness within.

She peered inside but no longer saw any creature moving about.

“Hello? Are you still there?  I want to know your secret!”

Again there was only silence, so she stepped forward into the closet until she was sure she would hit her nose on the back wall.

The girl spun around as quickly as she could, but it was too late. The door had closed behind her ,and it wouldn’t budge. Through the keyhole she watched as the creature she let out transformed into a little girl and climbed up into her bed.

She couldn’t see anything in the darkness, but she could feel herself changing into something horrible.  It was then that she realized what the monster’s secret had been and that she had been tricked.
