Funny thing, the present.
Not quite interchangeable with the word "gift," but close enough.
The past is gone, the future is nigh, but here we're given the present.
Not "a" present, "the present."
Like some gift given from some mysterious figure.
But what kind of gift is the present?
We wake up each morning, flip on the TV to watch recaps of overnight shootings, international flood crises, statistics on how we'll all be completely broke at some point. (If not now)
What kind of gift is the present when we only get tidbits of good stories, small acts of kindness, heroism, restoration in humanity?
I don't know. Maybe I'm using my present wrong. Spending too much time focusing on the past and the future. Gifts that have already been used, and gifts that haven't even been given yet.
It is better to give than to receive.
Perhaps the present should be about giving ourselves the most meaningful lives.
Maybe giving back to others whose presents may not be the best is a good way to start.
Taking time for ourselves can be another good way.
I still don't know. The present can be quite confusing. I still don't know how it works, how to use it, how to get the most of it.
While our presents may not be the best, maybe we can work our way around them.
Find ways to utilize the present.
After all, we have been given some mysterious present, called "the" present.
Not "a" present, but "the" present.
