We all interpret the world with individual perspectives and reflections. Though an event may affect a group of people, each person makes sense of it using his or her own experiences as references.
People also distort their realities, creating a perception of what reality is for them, specifically. For example, a woman talks herself into believing an uninterested man loves her, shaping her life around this farce. A businessman talks himself into believing he'll be promoted when in fact he rests at the end of a line of 100. A mom tells herself her son isn't doing drugs. Etc.
