RE: Heroes

Cover Image

Humanity has always searched for the larger-than-life, the exceptional person who performs amazing feats and --

Okay, enough of the PBS announcer voice. Superheroes. Mythological figures. Your mom. Everybody's got one, or a whole stable of them. The friend who makes sure everybody gets their drunk self home at the end of the night. The teacher who made you believe you could be anything you wanted to be. The athlete who makes you want to go faster, be stronger.

Or talk about why we have this need for finding heroes. Why do we have to attribute exceptionality? Why not celebrate what's amazing about all of us? Is it a bad thing to single out heroes and turn the rest of us into the cheering crowd, the damsels in distress? Are we better off focusing on the power of the people?
