a disagreement

all your poems are
about you, he says.

you’re reading them
wrong, she says

they are about the
anticipation of a child
on christmas eve, which
becomes the anticipation

of a girl to see her lover
as she combs her hair in
the mirror and adjusts
her blouse so carefully

they are about the lost
souls who want to die
because their lovers
have left, or they can’t

find work, or they
simply can’t see themselves
making it until the
end of the day

they are about the
ones whose pain is
invisible and the ones
who wear it on their faces

every day.  they are about
the fact that, every day,
these people carry on, or
great numbers of them do

they are about the common
courageousness that goes
unnoticed, uncelebrated
unknown

they are about the ones who—

oh i give up, she says,
they are about me.

(he only wants to hear
that he is right, and not

alone in not understanding
what she is talking about

it is incomprehensible
no one sees what he
does not in these words)

but she'll keep on writing
although discouraged

she owes it to someone
other than herself

who will pick the poem
up and understand

that it is about them.
