Colonel & Simon

INT. HAYS CONDO/KITCHEN – MORNING

A modern setting. All white: fridge, island-style counter, sink, chairs. Everything in the kitchen is obsessively clean. The only color is from the PYRAMID of GREEN APPLES that serves as the counter’s centerpiece.

COLONEL, late 40s, a man of many faces, is sitting at the counter, with a coffee mug in one hand and a Blackberry in the other.

SIMON, 17, a tainted youth, stumbles into the doorway, yawning.

Eager for interaction with his son, Colonel attentively looks up at Simon.

COLONEL
Morning.

Simon shoots him a bothered look.

SIMON
Morning.

Simon walks over to the fridge and pulls out a gallon jug of milk. Next to the fridge, he pulls out a spoon from a drawer and a bowl from a cabinet. He slides all three across the counter to an empty high chair.

COLONEL
Excited for school today?

SIMON
Oh, you bet.

Simon goes to the coffee maker and pours himself a mug.

COLONEL
What are you doing?

SIMON
Java.

COLONEL
Since when have you been drinking coffee?

SIMON
A couple months ago. Dad, this isn’t some covert thing. The mugs are in the dishwasher.

COLONEL
Oh...I bought Lucky Charms.

SIMON
I saw. Thanks for that.

COLONEL
You’re welcome.

Simon grabs his mug and sits down at the counter. He pours his cereal into the bowl and soaks it in the milk. He takes a quick sip of his coffee, satisfied.

COLONEL
How do you drink it?

SIMON
Black.
(off Colonel’s curious look)
I can’t help it. You do it the best.

COLONEL
I do?

SIMON
Yeah. I guess you’re good at brewing stuff.

Colonel smiles at this small moment of improvement in their relationship. Simon catches it while chewing on his cereal.

SIMON
What?

COLONEL
Nothing. How are the Lucky Charms? There’s a new marshmallow.

SIMON
They’re good.

COLONEL
Good.

Colonel continues smiling, happy about this trivial connection with Simon.
