By chance, a black hole and a star find each other floating in a popular new nebula only a few aeons old.

STAR:

Hi!

BLACK HOLE:

Oh, hey.

STAR:

This is some nebula, huh?

BLACK HOLE:

Yeah it’s not bad. What brings you around here?

STAR:

I’m on vacation. I don’t know where I’m going really, I’m just wandering around to be honest. I like it though. It suits me.

BLACK HOLE:

I used to be the same way. I remember when I was like you. You stars are one of the few beautiful things in this otherwise cold, dark place.

STAR:

That’s nice of you to say. I don’t feel like that, you know. That’s not how I see myself, or the universe, really.

BLACK HOLE:

Well we never see ourselves like that until it’s over. To have that fire, that fundamental burn inside of you. I miss it. I don’t see the world like I used to. I mean, I lost all my planets, I had a falling out with my local cluster...

STAR:

You don’t seem that bad to me.

BLACK HOLE:

I’m not bad, I don’t think at least. Trouble just follows me around like a clingy planet.

STAR:

Maybe, but I think you might just need to change your outlook.

The star smiles, and the two hold hands as they meander through the nebula. Their walk, unfortunately, is cut short; the black hole trips on a gas cloud and falls onto the star.

BLACK HOLE:

Oh no! No! NO!

But it’s too late. The star has already been totally consumed by the black hole. The black hole stands, horrified at what it has done.

STAR:

Hey! I’m still here!

BLACK HOLE:

What? But-

STAR:

You’ve never done this before, have you?

BLACK HOLE:

No, of course not! Where are you?

STAR:

We’re part of a black hole, silly. I think it’s actually kind of egotistical to think that YOU are the black hole. You’re not, you know, you’re just a star just like me.

STAR:

We’re both stars?

STAR:

That’s right. Just two stars caught up in a black hole. I think we’ll make good company.

STAR:

Wow. I...I think so too.

STAR:

Where to now then?

STAR:

Let’s just wander around for a bit.

STAR:

I think that suits us wonderfully.
