John and Jane At the End of the World (Short Screenplay)

By furious

A couple quietly experience the end of the world in their small apartment.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

The SINK drips. There is a PAN on the STOVE. EGGSHELLS in a CARTON. A COFFEE POT is half-full on the COUNTER. JANE sits at the TABLE staring out the WINDOW. The KITCHEN is very small. The apartment is very small. Everything in the KITCHEN, and the whole apartment, for that matter, is frozen in a moment of mid-use. JANE, herself, is in her PAJAMAS and maybe a ROBE. On the TABLE is her BREAKFAST. It is untouched. JANE tears little pieces off the corner of her napkin.
The sound of a KEY in a LOCK.

INT. LIVINGROOM - DAY

The FRONT DOOR opens and JOHN walks in and closes the DOOR. He puts his KEYS on the HOOK next to the DOOR and drops the NEWSPAPER in the BASKET with the other unopened NEWSPAPERS. He walks toward the KITCHEN and throws his COAT on the COUCH.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

JANE is still sitting at the TABLE looking out the WINDOW. JOHN walks in. He sees her.

JOHN
(from doorway)
Have you been sitting there all day?

She looks at him.

JANE
Where have you been?

JOHN sits.

JOHN
I came as soon as I heard.
(beat)
Well, they say we still have about eight minutes.

JANE looks at JOHN in disbelief.

JANE
How can you be so flip about this?

INT. KITCHEN - LATER

JOHN is standing by the WINDOW looking out. JANE looks at JOHN.

JOHN
What have they been saying on the radio?

JANE
I turned it off. It was upsetting me.

JOHN
I think we should do something. Enjoy the day.

JANE
We’ve got six minutes left and you want to go for a walk?

JOHN
Would you rather stay in here scared? Or would you rather enjoy the next six minutes?

JANE
How could they do this to us?

JOHN
You know, we did this first.

JANE
We did this first!? We had a reason!

JOHN
I”m sure they have a reason.

JANE
WE didn’t do anything.

JOHN
Not personally.

JANE
You think everything’s so simple.

JOHN turns to JANE.

JOHN
Isn’t it?

JANE
You’re always against everything. Life’s not as simple as you think it is.

JOHN
Well it is now.

JANE looks at him.

INT. LIVINGROOM - DAY

JOHN and JANE are sitting on the COUCH.

JANE
I think I would like to eat a giant chili cheeseburger.

JOHN
Really?

JANE
Yeah. What about you?

JOHN
Anything?

JANE
Yeah. Anything.

JOHN
You know? I kind of like just hanging out with you.

JANE
That’s corny.

JOHN
No. I mean look. I got a day off work. It's a nice day out. I’ve got the company of a relatively good looking woman.

They almost laugh.

JANE
What do you think it will feel like?

JOHN
I don’t know.

JANE
Do you think it will hurt?

JOHN
It will probably be over before you know it.

JANE
Yeah.

INT. LIVINGROOM - LATER

JANE and JOHN are standing by the WINDOW, looking out.

JANE
I’m scared.

JOHN
I know.

JOHN takes JANE’S hand. She squeezes his.

JANE
You’re right, though. It is a nice day. Let’s go for a walk.

The LIGHT from the WINDOW gets very bright and almost envelopes everything.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

The SINK drips. There are EGGSHELLS in a CARTON. A COFFEE POT is half-full. JANE sits at the TABLE staring out the WINDOW. The LIGHT is getting brighter. She starts to smile. SOUND of a KEY in LOCK. LIGHT gets brighter until entire frame is white.
