My dad taught me how to make fly cages by carving a hole into a cork and using straight pins as the prison bars. He showed me how to put some wet sugar in the fly cage, catch a fly, stuff the fly in, push the straight pins down into the cork to make a 'fly cage" ( or what I now call 'prison"). He also initiated letting me pick out a snail to take home from the escargo pushcarts on the streets of Madrid. I have not doubt that the reason I still feel the need to save snails and corks comes from those young and wonderous days of spending quality time with my dad.
