I love the Ramayana - I love its complexity and ambiguity. While it's taken on one level - as you say - a battle of good vs evil, Ram saves Sita from the evil Ravan and happily they live ever after - the 'ever after' for me is the most interesting bit. The distrust of Ram towards Sita about her possible infidelity with her captor, the exile of Sita and her sons - and how she emerges as a true independent woman and single mother! I always find it odd that people venerate her as an 'ideal wife' figure - one of sacrifice and devotion to her husband, when she actually has the balls to say a big F- you to Ram when he's planning to have her murdered.
Yes, always one of my favourites :)
