The Last Goodbye

“Tell me what I need to do” he begged. “Please, just tell me what I need to do and I’ll fix it”

But there was nothing he could do. He knew it, and so did she. But neither of them wanted to admit the truth. A heavy, foreboding silence fell over them. Panic hung in the air like static before a thunderstorm. The night enveloped them into darkness. What was there to say now? How can you undo the past? Take back your words? Rewrite history? Some say it's possible only through forgiveness, but that doesn’t really change anything does it? What do you do with all the broken pieces?

“Just leave” she whispered through tear-stained cheeks. Her eyes wandered across the dash, unseeing. Her hands, limp and useless in her lap. There was nothing else for it. This was the end, and the beginning wrapped up in a single, infinite moment. What lay on the otherside was unknown to either of them. Was it worth it? Was it worth it to give up on everything and chase the smoke of their dreams? There was only one way to find out. Once and for all, was this the only path for her, for him? Could they really make their own destiny?

The night carried on. Their silence danced between them. He, with his head in his hands, sank defeatedly against the steering wheel. And her, with a heavy heart, avoided his eyes. It was time.

She took one final deep breath. It was now or never. Take the hands away from the dash, take them to her seatbelt, take one more breath, click. Take one more motion, to the door, to the handle, to the outside. He watched in horror, stunned into inaction. What do you do when everything you’ve ever loved walks away? How can life turn from a such picturesque memory into a beautiful nightmare? There is no explanation, or truth to this madness. But one day, far from now, when he looks back on the life that was, maybe then he will find peace in the past. Maybe then, he will forgive what was never really there.
