The Body of a Bird

Cover Image

I feel myself with the body of a bird

small bones, sharp beating heart

the sky feels big and the direction of the winds unsure

my smallness makes me invisible

I sit alight a branch of an old Oak that has been here since far before me

and will be here long after my feathers have fallen and become one with the roots that go deep into this damp earth

I sing

and my song seems lost amidst the giants of the world

one small song amid this bedlam

but when it is True it rings out small but powerful

and is part of the turning, as much as anything ever has been and ever will

It is not for me to know or care whether it is heard

It is for me to sing
