"I just can't do this anymore."
Jake looked at his friends as they stared at him blankly from across the table in the middle of the Applebee's.
"You have been with her for three years man, you can't end this."
His best friend Ryan said.
"Yes I can, and it's only been two years and seven months."
"I thought you were in love with her man," his other friend Charlie quickly said.
"So did I, I just, I'm not anymore. I just have felt this way for about a month."
"Maybe it's just a phase, you'll pass over it."
"No man, I'm sure about this."
Ryan scratched his head and looked down.
"Well, when are you seeing her next?"
"We are seeing a movie at eight."
"Dude, are you sure you want to do this? You guys are perfect for each other."
Jake looked down and stared at his hamburger for a little, then began to slowly eat it.
They continued discussing the feelings that Jake stopped having, when they finished, Ryan looked at Jake and said, "You know it's good you feel like a dick about this, because if you didn't. I'd kick your ass." Charlie paid the bill and the three of them left towards their separate cars. "Let me know how it goes man!" Ryan yelled from across the parking lot. Jake nodded even though he was sure Ryan couldn't see him. Jake got in his gray 96 Dodge Intrepid and looked at the empty passenger seat next to him. I feel like such an asshole, he thought to himself. He drove home and laid on his couch for about an hour, just thinking about what he was going to do.
He left his house at seven thirty. The entire time he was thinking about the events that were going to happen. He picked up his girlfriend around seven forty five. "Hey baby," she said as she got in the car, and leaned over to kiss him. He kissed her back, his thoughts still stuck on what was going to happen that night. She was talking to him but he wasn't listening, he could only imagine how bad he was going to feel, he already felt terrible, but seeing her expression after he ended this would kill him. They got to the theater, and sat down. "I love being early to the movies," she said, "you always get to see those funny adds with the pictures of the dogs and things like that." Jake nodded and smiled a little. They sat down in the middle of an aisle in the center of the theater. Jake looked at her and said, "Baby, we need to talk about something." she looked at him, "What's wrong baby?" he started, "We have been together for almost three years, and I know that you are very happy." as he was saying these things, he noticed his girlfriend look at the screen and get very wide eyed and smile rather largely. "Yes!" she practically screamed and grabbed on to him. "Yes? yes to what?" Jake asked and looked at the screen, his jaw dropped. the words "Amy will you marry me?" were on the screen, surrounded by hearts. Holy shit, Jake thought as he was sitting there being practically suffocated by his girlfriend. Amy leaned into his ear, "I love you." she whispered. "Me too." he said back, even though he wasn't sure what he was feeling. She grabbed him by the hand. "Let's get out of here, I need to tell my parents." They left and everyone in the theater was cheering and applauding. Amy began to call her family and Jake walked away and called Ryan.
"Holy crap that was fast dude."
"We have a problem."
"What did she hit you with the car or something?"
"This is serious man. She thinks I just proposed."
"HOLY SHIT!" Ryan yelled into the phone.
"I know man, I know."
Jake went on to explain the situation to Ryan.
"Well, what are you going to do?"
"I don't know, what do you think?"
"This is all up to you man, you have to do what you think is right."
"I don't think there is a right thing in this situation."
"Sure there is."
"Well, what am I supposed to do?"
"Make one of those pros and cons list."
"I'm standing in a movie theater bathroom."
"So? scratch it into a stall, there are tons of things scratched into the walls of a stall."
"I can't believe I'm doing this. I'll call you back when I'm done."
Jake hung up the phone and reluctantly looked through his keys for what he thought the sharpest one was. He found a key that he forgot about, he actually didn't remember where it was from, and with it he scratched a "T" in the wall, he began to scribble things into the wall for about twenty minutes, until he finally finished.
He called Ryan back.
"So, which side has more?"
"Holy crap really? Cause that is not what I was expecting."
"Me either, but the more I think about it, the more this makes sense."
"So the guy who was so sure at lunch that he was breaking up with his girlfriend is getting married?"
"That's what it looks like."
"Dude, are you sure you want to do this?"
"Charlie will be pissed that you called me first."
"He always is."
They both laughed.
"Well, good luck man." Ryan said.
Jake hung up the phone.
He exited the bathroom and saw Amy standing there.
He grabbed her and kissed her.
She smiled, and looked at him.
"What did Ryan say?"
"nothing really, just 'congrats' and such."
Jake kissed her again and held her hand.
"I love you." He whispered in here ear.
"I love you too." she said back, completely unaware of the plans that were originally made for the day.
