The Cliff- Scene One

By alisseb3410

This is just a short little piece (emphasis on short...it probably could have used some plumping up) involving one male and one female. Hope you enjoy :)

Scene opens with a GIRL in her early twenties standing on the edge of a cliff. Behind her is a small clearing and woods beyond that. She has her eyes closed with tears rolling down her face.

A GUY looking slightly older than her walks out of the woods and watches her for a few moments. She does not hear him.

GUY
(Looking around) Beautiful isn’t it? This is probably one of my favorite spots around here. (Starts crossing the clearing towards GIRL. She has still not acknowledged him) You might want to move back a little, you don’t want to fall. (Reaches out) Hey-

At his last words she turns her head towards him and his demeanor softens.

GIRL
(Pause) Don’t I?

GUY
Oh, I’m sorry…I didn’t realize…by all means, go ahead.

GIRL steps back

GIRL
I wasn’t expecting an audience.

GUY
(Shrugs) What does that matter?

GIRL looks unsure, as if he’s asked a good question.

GIRL
Well…I don’t…Why would you…You don’t even know me!

GUY
All the more reason for you not to care, I don’t know you. I don’t know your circumstances; I have no reason to stop you really.

GIRL
You wouldn’t try to stop me.

GUY
Do you want me to stop you?

GIRL
No!

GUY
No? (sits down) Then why haven’t you jumped yet? Why hadn’t you jumped before I even got here?

GIRL looks out over the cliff into the distance.

GIRL
Because…I’m not…ready.

GUY
Hmm, well you can sit here with me until you are…ready.

GUY settles into a more comfortable position while GIRL considers this. She eventually sits too.

GUY
May I ask what made you come to this?

GIRL
You may.

GUY sits there expectantly for a moment before turning to GIRL.

GUY
Ah, but you won’t answer. Fair enough.

GIRL returns GUY’s glance for a few seconds before turning away again. GUY smiles and turns away as well.

GUY
About three years ago I was in your shoes. Standing on this very cliff in fact. Ready to jump.

GIRL looks skeptical.

GUY
Really. It was fall, perfect weather. The leaves were the exact same shade of red as the sunset that evening. Absolutely beautiful. You could smell the damp earth of the forest floor and hear all the little animals scurrying about their little lives getting ready for the night- (laughs) I’m sorry I must sound ridiculous right now.

GIRL says nothing but there is a faint smile playing on her lips.

GUY
(shakes his head and laughs again) Yeah. I do, I sound like a big wimp. But it’s true. I saw and heard all of that and I don’t know. It was just so…real. I guess I had a there-are-bigger-things-out-there-than-me moment. I realized that all the shit I had gone through; everything that had brought me down and made me feel terrible was…nothing. I decided to let it go, let it die. Let that life and that person die. But not me, not the real me. I started a whole new life, one that is real.

GIRL
Ha. You make it sound pretty easy. I don’t have that option.

GUY
Sure you do!

GIRL
No, no I don’t. I wouldn’t be here if I did.

GUY
Hear me out, if you were planning on throwing yourself off this cliff for real then I have to assume you haven’t left behind anything you can’t live without- sorry, no pun intended. No people, no job, no stuff…there’s nothing to lose.

GIRL
Exactly, I have nothing so how could I possibly just start a new life?

GUY
Tell you what, you can come live with me.

GIRL
Are you crazy?!

GUY
Just trust me.

GIRL
But I-

GUY
Do you have other plans? Other than the bottom of this cliff I mean.

GIRL
Well no…

GUY
Then come with me. One day, that’s all. If its not better than dying I’ll bring you right back here and let you jump. (pause) But I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

(Pause)

GIRL
Why are you doing this? You don’t know anything about me or-

GUY
I know but I think I’d like to change that.

They stare at each other for a few moments.

GIRL
You'll really bring me right back here? You're not going to call the police or something?

GUY
(nods) Promise. Right back here. No police, no anything. Just you, right here.

GIRL stares at him for another few seconds before looking back out over the cliff.

GIRL
Okay.

Fade to black.
