Are you there, Democracy? It’s me, the Internet. (HITRECORD x ACLU) > Write down your creative sci-fi ideas RE: Future Tech & Democracy - Writing

*blink*

By kouralilly

the year is 2325.

humanity has reached the epitome of technological advancements. everyone gets their information from the insides of their eyelids each time they blink. instant updates are sent directly into their brains with second-by-second navigation through every form of social media and news at a subliminal level, so that the information just becomes part of their thoughts.

*blink* a picture of your friend's kid...and later, when thinking of your friend, your "memory" of what their child looks like is the picture your social media feed gave you, even though to you, it shows up in your mind just like any other memory, part of your thoughts as if it was yours to begin with.

*blink* a news headline. a famous politician was just arrested for suspected fraud. later, the politician comes up in conversation. but you write them off...because in your memories, you have it filed away that he is a fraud. but not as information you received and processed and a conclusion you came to - it is there as if it was your thought to begin with.

*blink* *blink* *blink* *blink* *blink* fashion. movie reviews. your neighbor's recipe for ravioli. the most updated, by-the-second information about everything that happens in the world around you.

we have no wars. elections are decided within months of the nominations being announced. movies are not watched because our blink-downloads give us the gist, and the concepts become part of our memory as if we saw it. instead, reviews tell us the highlights and what we should think about it, because that is how movie critics write - full of spoilers and all basic plot points covered. we have no need to see the real thing for ourselves.

that is what we have become.

there is no need to see the real thing for ourselves.

everything the headlines tell us is how we see the world.

we think that we are free.

but we are more trapped, herded, and mass-controlled than we ever have been.

we take everything from the media as what we see. and when the government wants us to focus on one thing, to watch the left hand while the right hand takes away what is left of our rights, they throw fancy news stories at us, and create conflict, and spread generalistic ideas that trap us in feuds that prevent actual free thought. because our attention is directed to the next thing we "need" to be talking about.

we become what we see.

because we no longer need to look.
