“Ring of Death”
The bell rang, we had fifteen minutes.
Watching us gather and circle,
our teachers didn’t say a word.
Today, it was me and Little Joey.
He was small, at least comparatively.
Running, not caring for his own safety,
he ran straight into a slap to the head.
We weren’t out to injure,
but we were used to blood and bruises.
At least today I wasn’t against one of the fast kids
or one of the few in karate.
Before we knew it, our break was over,
it was back to Pre-Algebra or our study of Columbus.
Today I got lucky; I beat Joey pretty bad.
Mr. Blue smiled when I knocked him into a tree once.
