The Newbie Experience Collab > Tell us how you became comfortable contributing, who made you feel ... - Writing

Hey, new user? READ THIS!!!

By andyramone

New guys, this is important. You need to read this. I'm gonna give you 3 bits of advice that are crucial not just to your enjoyment of being on hitRECord, but to the well being and future of hitRECord itself. Please, please take note and understand.

1. You cannot upload anything that is not 100% your own original work or in the public domain. Period. No excuses, no loopholes, no exceptions, no Justin Bieber cover songs. It completely fucks up how we make stuff here if you break this rule. If you are guilty of this, hide it. Click on Edit, and hide that shit. Go do it now.

2. If you have a criticism, or advice, or a suggestion on someones work, then be constructive. Think before you write. This is not youtube, or deviantart, or facebook, or reddit, or tumblr. We are a small close knit community. We are friends and peers. Really. If someone is not asking for a critique, don't give one. If someone is, be constructive. And best of all, if you have a suggestion then remix that shit! That is how this whole thing works. Don't write a comment with suggested lyrics, or saying you'd like to add a chorus or a bass line. GO AND DO IT AND UPLOAD IT. Cite your resources. Now you're a hitRECorder.

3. Cite your resources. I know, it's a pain, I know, it can seem confusing. But if you remix someone, write down the record number from the URL (eg this record's number is 2533069) and click on cite resources when you upload your record (scroll down and you'll see it) and use the record number to search for the record. Even better, use a crate (you've watched all the intro videos about crates and stuff right? Cool) And don't you dare upload your remix anywhere else without their permission. Again, it is fundamental for the future of hitRECord that you do this. If you don't want to do it, or don't understand why, hitRECord may not be for you.

Please take this in. Absorb it and understand it, share it. I do not write this to try and put you off, I write it because I care about this place and the people who come here. If you read this record and think it doesn't apply to you, you are wrong.

There are so, so, so many of you joining up at the moment (way more than ever before) and it is so crucial we all get this right. hitRECord can be the most wonderful magical place (really!) but we all have to do our bit to get it right. We are all responsible. All of us. You can only get out of hitRECord what you put in.

As I said in my last letter, if you have any questions, or are stuck or feeling lost, ask someone! Resident Curators (found here https://www.hitrecord.org/help) area good place to start. Leave a question here if you can't find anyone and I will do my best to help.)

Thanks

p.s I apologise for the serious tone here. For a more sunshine and rainbows open letter, see here: https://www.hitrecord.org/records/1838207
