An Interview with dreamerashley

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Ashley, and I am a freshman in college majoring in psychology (for now) with a minor in photography. I love photography, but I won’t label myself a photographer. I like to write, but I’m not the greatest writer. I’m a good listener. I like to help people; I’m a pro at making others happy. I love music and making mixed cds (ask and you shall receive). Is this too random?

What's the origin of your artist name?

I’m a dreamer (you should hear some of the crazy ideas running through my mind) and my name is Ashley, so dreamerashley!

What has been your biggest challenge with your art so far?

Trying to remain motivated and inspired. Also, when I see others’ work, I just see my work as very basic or cliché and that everyone else is much better at creating art than I. I’m probably better at appreciating art than creating it, but I still continue to create it. With photography, it’s becoming more competitive because everyone can get their hands on a camera and a photo editing program; everyone’s calling themselves a photographer these days. I enjoy trying other mediums of art, but photography is the only medium I’m actually kind of good at.

Who or what is your biggest influence?

Oh wow. I don’t think I can pick just one person or anything. Average people doing awesome things influence me. The people who prove everyone wrong, follow their dreams, and “make it” influence me. Inspirational words and phrases are big too. Maybe even my English teacher junior year influenced me, especially since he didn’t kick me out of AP after all the times I didn’t finish reading my books on time. He even wrote me a letter of recommendation for college- it must’ve been because I was always honest with him, and I wasn’t intimidated by him like everyone else.

What is your wildest story?

Wild? My life is pretty boring, so any “wild” stories would probably be considered embarrassing. Well, there was that time earlier this year when a group of friends and I went to the mall after school because we had a half day at school. My friend was kind of sad the whole time until she explained the whole situation to us and we assured her everything would be fine and that she definitely had nothing to worry about. She was in a much better mood once we left. I was driving, and at one point, she rolled down the window and had her but sticking out of the window. I was freaking out big time. When I tried to accelerate more, the tires felt weird, and when I hit the brakes, the tires felt weird. Now I was panicking. The car was starting to slow down, and we were on a busy street. My friend Morgan in the back seat pointed out that my friend had knocked my gear to neutral. I was so happy to know that the car wasn’t just giving up on me so that the cops would pull me over with my friend’s butt hanging out the window mooning the world. My plan was to ban her from the car after that since it’s my mom’s car and I don’t want any illegal or indecent behavior happening in there, but she’s been good the other times she’s rode in the car. Senior year was hectic indeed.

What is the last book you read?

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison for my English class. I haven’t read a book for leisure in over a year or two, thanks to school.

If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be?

Stéphanie from The Science of Sleep so I can be all creative with Stéphane and ride the pony with him at the end. Or maybe even Princess Leia so I could kick some butt in space and hug Chewie and hang out with R2-D2 and meet freakin Yoda. Or even Vivica A. Fox in Independence Day as Will Smith’s girlfriend, minus the being a stripper part lol, because who wouldn’t want to date the guy who’s helping save the entire planet and help other people survive the alien attack with my son and dog? Or even Lukas Haas in Mars Attacks! when he kills the aliens by blasting his grandma’s music, that’s the only time I’d really want to be his character because that’s the coolest thing ever!

What couldn’t you live without?

People in general- family, friends, the world. Music and diversity too.

What is your secret talent?

I know how to play the piano a little, but I don’t know how much of a secret that is. I can’t be truly mean to anyone, but that might be obvious to anyone who meets me lol. Oh! I do have a pretty big imagination, but not to the point where I’m blind to most of reality, so that could be a secret talent because people may not necessarily see it.

Tell me about the last dream you remember having?

In last night’s dream, I was outlining some ideas for a novel for NaNoWriMo. Time elapsed, and then I realized I had written over 1,000 words of the novel already. I freaked out because it wasn’t November yet, so I deleted the whole thing. I didn’t want to be a cheater. Also, I was doing a ton of laundry in my dorm, so I was going from floor to floor to use washers. It also looked extremely creepy in the dorm, I guess because Halloween is right around the corner. It was weird.

What are you craving right now?

A chocolate shake from Oberweis.

What was the last song you fell in love with?

This is a tough question. I’m just going to say “Saeglopur” by Sigur Ros because it’s the first song that came to mind but not necessarily the last song I fell in love with. I just love the feeling I get from listening to this song. It’s one of my favorite songs to drive to, no doubt. It starts with just piano and what I believe to be a glockenspiel or xylophone, and it seems as if the song will stay in this sort of slow and soft tempo. At close to 2:00, more instruments enter and the song picks up a little. I just love that shift. I just love everything about this song.

Can you hula hoop?

Of course I can! I’m pretty good at keeping that hoop going for long periods of time.

What do you like?

Food, music, movies, art, people, diversity, life, Chicago, etc.

What do you dislike?

Eggs, not being close enough to Chicago while I’m in college, stress, my procrastination, and a few other things. Sometimes I dislike money because I hardly have any, and the world doesn’t give out enough things for free.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

No one can make you do anything. That may not be the best, but once my 5th grade teacher told us that all the time, it really stuck with me. I couldn’t get away with saying that Melanie made me steal Brandon’s eraser or something like that. It really struck me how much free will I actually had because at a young age one can be so easily persuaded. I can be influenced to take certain actions, but in the end, it’s my decision.

How and why did you start RECording?

I was a freshman in high school, and I must’ve searched the web for more info on Joe, which sounds really creepy, but I was 14 and had nothing better to do with my time than search for new music and other works and such from actors I liked. Honestly, though, I couldn’t tell you exactly where I found the link for hitRECord, but I browsed through it a lot before I actually joined in ’07 or ’08.

But if we’re just talking about the act of RECording period, I’ve been doing that since I was 5 or 6. I wrote a short story about my fish Stanley after he died when I was only 5 or 6, or maybe it was more of a paragraph of how he went to “Fishy Heaven” after we flushed him down the toilet. He was the only fish I ever owned that lived quite a few months; if only my family and I hadn’t gone to Florida… Apparently, my dad recorded me singing some randomness when I was three, but my mom had the tape in her car when it got broken into back in the ‘90s. So, there might be a tape of my baby voice floating around the streets of Chicago or its suburbs, or its decomposing at some garbage dump or in some sewer if it was littered.

So, I’ve been writing stories, journaling, attempting to paint and draw, and taking photos since a young age. I hit record every day.
