Short play I wrote that could work for intro

One Act

SCENE ONE:
The scene takes place in the underworld. It’s a gothic looking living room. Hades and Persephone are having a discussion about their son Amelius.

HADES
I cannot ignore this Persephone! He has broken a divine law…I am to decide what must occur.

PERSEPHONE
But banishment?

HADES
Yes. I must teach him that the gods set order, not him.

PERSEPHONE
You cannot teach virtues by practicing vices. Yes, our son is ill-tempered, but you have the power to show him mercy.

HADES
I am not allowed mercy. I am ruler of this kingdom and I cannot look a fool among the gods. ...Do not ask me for mercy, he is banished.

PERSEPHONE
No! I beg of you, seek council with Zeus, he will speak wisely.

HADES
My brother is a fool…with him we shall discuss this sordid matter for the final time. (Persephone and Hades leave the room)

Amelius quickly enters the empty room angered. He sits down on a chair facing the audience and says:

AMELIUS
…Banishment...such vile language. Disrespectful almost. I am Amelius, son of Hades, prince of the underworld, how could I live with mortals? My father thinks of me so lowly. What does he expect from me?...Repentance? Fear? Shame?...No, to feel shame you must have respect and I have none. I let someone live and I stand unforgiving. He was a fool for wanting to return, but what I saw in him surpassed the gates of Hades. He would rather die for the freedom of his country than live in fear of it…and I understood. (Zeus quietly enters the room) I expected penalty, but I will not be sent to live with waste.

ZEUS
Gods do not create waste.

AMELIUS
But they serve no purpose. Gods control the universe, you control the gods, but them, they are waste.

ZEUS
Control is something I do not think you understand.

AMELIUS
That may be so, but mortals have none and I do.

ZEUS
I’m afraid not Amelius. I have spoken to Hades and we have agreed on the matter. You shall be banished for your crime. (Amelius attempts to speak) Do not interrupt for I have little patience with you. You allowed someone to regain their life and for that you cannot be forgiven. You are to leave at once to find this mortal and bring him back.

AMELIUS
And once he is brought back?

ZEUS
Your father shall reconsider your banishment. I also decided that you shall not go alone. Artemis has requested to be your guardian.

AMELIUS
I do not need a guardian. That is infantile!

ZEUS
You have shown me no other way to treat you. Dismiss yourself from your parents and you shall leave immediately.

AMELIUS
I have nothing to say to them.

ZEUS
Fine, Artemis is waiting for you to arrive. Once you arrive, you must live like a mortal. Living in the mortal world is not easy and you must listen to Artemis. I expect you to behave yourself knowing that I can make your banishment permanent. (Zeus walks halfway across the stage)Farewell Amelius (Zeus exits)

The scene closes with Amelius standing alone in the room as the stage goes dark.

SCENE TWO:
This scene takes place on a “busy” street in California. Amelius and Artemis are the only people on stage, but you hear lots of cars, horns, people taking, and footsteps. They are both dressed in classic Greek robes.

ARTEMIS
Amelius! (Embraces Amelius)

AMELIUS
…Ok, that’s enough. (Artemis let’s go)

ARTEMIS
So how are you?

AMELIUS
Must you speak like them?

ARTEMIS
It’s cool.

AMELIUS
Not so.

ARTEMIS
You’re just lame.

AMELIUS
I am not. Stop that.

ARTEMIS
Come on, try it. PLEAAASE?

AMELIUS
NO! (Shakes his head out of frustration) Keep this up Artemis, and I will leave you stranded.

(Artemis’s demeanor changes)
ARTEMIS
Fine, I hope you enjoy living in the mortal world, permanently.

AMELIUS
Excuse me?

ARTEMIS
You leave me and I can make sure you never return.

AMELIUS
What makes you think I want to return?

ARTEMIS
You are aching to leave. Be realistic, you cannot do this without my help.

AMELIUS
I do not need your help. I can do this alone.

ARTEMIS
Impaired by your false pride. I pity you.

AMELIUS
Your eyes are clouded by shrubbery, mortals, and wildlife. The pity lies within me.

ARTEMIS
I dwell in realms of peace, love, and happiness.

AMELIUS
Those realms are merely illusions.

ARTEMIS
Hark the dark one speaking of what he does not understand.

AMELIUS
As do you. Putting mortals on a pedestal.

ARTEMIS
Revering mortals has never gotten me banished. You are the one who let a mortal into your good graces and fell from them.

AMELIUS
While all that is true, you act as if you were immune to his charm.

ARTEMIS
…What are you implying?

AMELIUS
You know exactly what I am implying.
Why else would you offer to come with me?

ARTEMIS
To protect you, you fool.

AMELIUS
No. You came to protect him, you female.

ARTEMIS
Is that an accusation or a threat?

AMELIUS
Take it as you wish.

Artemis looks pensive and speaks sternly.
ARTEMIS
You are in no position for either. Foul fate binds me to you and he must be found before I do something despicable.

AMELIUS
Gladly. We find him and all this will end. (Amelius exits)

Artemis nods in agreement.
ARTEMIS
Agreed. (Smiles then exits)

SCENE THREE:
This scene takes place in a small apartment that Amelius and Artemis have rented. They have been living in the mortal world for months so their appearance is modern. Artemis walks in the door and finds Amelius sleeping on the couch. Artemis walks to the couch and shakes Amelius. Amelius does not move so she shakes him again.

Amelius lies still.
AMELIUS
You might as well give up cause I’m not moving.

ARTEMIS
Fine, but you’ll miss the soldier.

Amelius slowly sits up and
looks carefully at Artemis.
AMELIUS
If you’re joking….

ARTEMIS
No. I found him!

Amelius looks Artemis in the eyes
AMELIUS
You’re being serious...

Artemis nods. Amelius is silent then gets up and starts pacing.
AMELIUS
Do you know what this means! We can go back! I’m free! No more mortal food,
no more jeans, no more smog, no more
roaches! All we have to do…

ARTEMIS
Is nothing.

Amelius continues pacing.
AMELIUS
What? (Dismisses the comment) Listen, we turn him in and we’re back in!

Artemis sits down on the couch.
ARTEMIS
…It’s not that simple. (Amelius stops pacing) Amelius, I can’t turn him in.

Amelius looks amused.
AMELIUS
Oh, that’s no problem, I’ll turn him in. I thought you’d want to stay.

ARTEMIS
…I do want to stay...but …I want him to be with me (Amelius starts laughing) …What’s so funny?

Amelius smiles venomously.
AMELIUS
You think I’d let that happen.

Artemis becomes defensive
and gets off the couch.
ARTEMIS
It’s not up to you.

AMELIUS
Yes it is. We’re returning him.

ARTEMIS
It’s not right Amelius and you know it.

AMELIUS
No, you’re not right. Use your head instead of your fucking feelings. We need to go back.

ARTEMIS
No, you need to go back. You’re being selfish.

Amelius approaches Artemis
AMELIUS
Do you hear yourself? You damn hypocrite. You disgust me.

Artemis becomes enraged and now they stand face to face.
ARTEMIS
How dare mention hypocrisy! You gave him freedom and now you want to take it back. You deserve to rot here for that alone.

AMELIUS
You’d love that wouldn’t you? Well let me tell you something, you’d be banished just for holding his hand. I wouldn’t rot alone.

A knock is heard at the door.
ARTEMIS
(Smiles) I’d enjoy nothing more. (Artemis walks towards the right exit) Let him in, I have to get ready.

AMELIUS
Enjoy it because it’ll be your last night with him. (Amelius walks towards the left exit)

ARTEMIS
Ha! (Exits)

Amelius opens the door.
SOLDIER
(Jokingly) All hail the prince of Hades.

AMELIUS
(Laughs) Hey man, come on in.

The soldier walks in, observes the room and sits on the couch.
SOLDIER
You look different.

Amelius walks to the refrigerator and grabs a beer.
AMELIUS
Artemis decided we should “blend in.”

SOLDIER
(amazed) And you agreed?

Amelius hands the soldier a beer and sits on the couch
AMELIUS
Nope. I wore my robes all the time until she burned them. Anyways, I’m not a fan of walking around naked so I had no choice.

SOLDIER
Brutal, but highly effective. *******

Amelius is silent for a
second then smiles.
AMELIUS
So you really like her?

Opens the beer and takes a drink.
SOLDIER
Yea, she’s just so different. Everything is exciting to her, you know?

AMELIUS
Yea, but doesn’t it get annoying? (Imitates Artemis pretending to hold a rock) Oh look, it’s a rock! Isn’t it beautiful! I wonder where it came from! What do you think it’s made of?

Amelius and the soldier laugh
AMELIUS
Seriously though, she talks too much. How do you deal with it?

SOLDIER
I guess I just love listening to her.

AMELIUS
Hah, well if you’re going to be with her, that’s all you’ll be doing (The soldier takes a drink) Trust me.

SOLDIER
I can manage. Besides, there’s this other girl, Jeanine, totally the opposite. I’m so sick of her.

AMELIUS
Really. Why?

SOLDIER
She’s too controlling. (Takes a drink) It’s nothing serious. I think Artemis is the one.

AMELIUS
Hah, you’re kidding right? She’s probably apathetic compared to Artemis.

SOLDIER
Artemis isn’t controlling

Amelius stands up and indicates to his clothing.
SOLDIER
But she’s only like that with you.

Amelius shakes his head in disagreement.
SOLDIER
You must have done something…

Amelius walks to the left exit and pretends to walk in holding packages.
AMELIUS
(Imitating Artemis) “Hey Amelius, I bought you some clothes, wanna try them on?” I said I didn’t feel like it and the next thing I knew she had a lighter to my robes. (Sits back down) It was a good thing I didn’t get burned

SOLDIER
Why would you get burned?

AMELIUS
(The soldier takes a drink) I was still wearing them.

SOLDIER
(The soldier spits out the beer) What?

AMELIUS
She musta been in a good mood too because she gave me options.

SOLDIER
What were they?

AMELIUS
Try the clothes and breathe or wear the robes and burn.

Artemis walks in from the right exit
ARTEMIS
Hi, sorry I took so long.

AMELIUS
(Smiles) No problem, we were just catching up on old times.

ARTEMIS
Great. Listen, I was thinking we could go Italian tonight?

SOLDIER
Sure. (Takes a drink and walks to the left exit) I’ll just bring the car around.

ARTEMIS
Wait a minute, you’ve been drinking.

SOLDIER
(Confused)…Yea?

ARTEMIS
I don’t think you should drive like that.

SOLDIER
…But it wasn’t that much…

Amelius clears his throat
ARTEMIS
Yea, but…could we walk there?

SOLDIER
But it’s freezing. I’ll be ok, really…

Amelius clears his throat louder and the soldier changes his composure.
SOLDIER
You know what, you’re right, let’s walk.

ARTEMIS
Really?

SOLDIER
Yea, got your coat?

ARTEMIS
Yeap. (Slightly holds her coat up)

The soldier helps Artemis put her coat and they exit. The door closes and Amelius is left on stage alone. He lays down flat on the couch and stretches his arms out under his neck.
AMELIUS
I’m so good it’s scary. (The lights dim off)

SCENE FOUR:
This scene takes place one week later and in the same apartment. The mood is frantic and angry as Artemis chases the soldier around the couch.

ARTEMIS
Why couldn’t you be honest with me?!?!

SOLDIER
I didn’t want to hurt you…I’m sorry,

Artemis grabs a handful of pens and approaches him as he backs away.
ARTEMIS
You piece of shit! You didn’t think I’d find out did you!?!?

SOLDIER
I was going to tell you. Please, listen to me.

ARTEMIS
No, stop making excuses! (Throws a pen at the soldier) Shut up and listen to me! (Throws another pen) I cannot believe I thought you love me, you stupid bastard! (Throws another pen)

The soldier backs away into kitchen area next to the table. The kitchen table is set for a romantic dinner with empty plates and glasses, unlit candles, and a bottle of wine.

SOLDIER
That’s enough Artemis! I really wanted to tell you, but …(Artemis throws another pen) ...DAMMIT!... Stop being so childish!

Artemis and the soldier are standing across the table now and Artemis is out of pens.
ARTEMIS
Fuck you! I knew something was wrong when you started agreeing with everything I said. You were placating me so you could be with that little bitch!

SOLDIER
What was I suppose do, I care about you! Why don’t you believe me!?!

Artemis looks him in
the eyes, reaches across the table, and slaps him.
SOLDIER
(Holds his jaw) You know what, I’m glad you did that. Because I always thought you were just a little odd. But now I see it all, you’re not eccentric, you’re insane.

The soldier grabs a coat off of the couch towards the left exit and runs into Amelius who is entering at the same time. Amelius, shocked, moves aside and the soldier exits. Artemis is standing at the table stoic. Amelius walks towards Artemis and drops the keys on the table.

AMELIUS
What happened?

Artemis is still for a minute then sobs.
ARTEMIS
…Go…Away…(Sobs) Please.

AMELIUS
Come on, talk to me, it can’t feel good to keep it all inside.

Artemis grabs the bottle of wine, pours herself a cup, and sits down.
ARTEMIS
I’m so messed up…I actually feel like having this conversation with you. (Takes a drink)

Amelius grabs the bottle and pours himself a glass.
AMELIUS
Ouch. (Takes a drink)

ARTEMIS
So I invited him over for dinner and he told me he would come after visiting a friend. (Takes a drink) So I’m getting everything ready and I realize I have no dessert. At a moment of sheer genius, I decide to pick up a cake at the bakery. (Takes a drink) I walk maybe half a block before I see him all over this other tramp.

AMELIUS
Who was she?

ARTEMIS
(Scowling) Jeanine

AMELIUS
(Nervously) Oh. (Takes a big drink) Did he see you?

ARTEMIS
Yea. He followed me back up. Trying to apologize. Telling me he was going to tell me about her. He had the nerve to tell me I was being childish (Takes a drink and looks at the empty glass) Boy that was good.

AMELIUS
Yea. (Takes a drink) I’ve never seen you drink this much.

Artemis pours herself some more wine.
ARTEMIS
I never thought I’d hate men. (Takes a drink)

AMELIUS
It isn’t just men. (Takes a drink) Women do it too. They all do it.

ARTEMIS
Hmmm. (Takes a drink)

AMELIUS
It’s like they don’t understand anything we gave them.

ARTEMIS
(Tipsy) You know…I think you’re right.

AMELIUS
(Takes a drink) That’s just the wine talking.

ARTEMIS
No. (Takes a drink) Maybe, but it’s still true.

AMELIUS
(Tipsy) I say …we just get rid of them.

ARTEMIS
(Hiccups)Yea? (Takes a drink)

AMELIUS
(Tipsy)Yea, the whole lot of them.

Amelius looks at his empty glass and frowns.
AMELIUS
(Tipsy) Well, I guess I’ll call it a night.

Amelius gets up swaying and fumbles to the couch. One there, he lays down and turns towards the inside.

ARTEMIS
Goo’night (Takes a drink)

She grabs the bottle to pour some more, but nothing comes out. She throws the bottle across the room and begins to cry. The lights turn off and a spotlight is on Artemis as she stands up and sways towards the center of the stage.

ARTEMIS
Their time has come.

She raises her arms towards the ceiling.
ARTEMIS
(Recites)

Aphrodite I beckon thee
to wipe these tears off from my face.
The world is being stripped of love
and I cannot save Earth's fading beauty

Zeus I beckon thee
ruler of all and everything supreme.
Get off your throne with all that is serene
and see how all planetary pain currents deadly electricity.

Athena I beckon thee
to fight my silent battle.
I see my fellow women being bought and sold like cattle
and so I wait for your salvation of feminine society.

Poseidon I beckon thee
dry the oceans hiding hatred under water.
Then man can see what they have taught their son or daughter
and apologize to you for their insincerity.

Persephone I beckon thee
to lead me into the brink of Hades.
I sacrifice myself for all of man's atrocities
and then maybe spark power into sacred femininity.

Artemis collapses to ground and the spotlight fades.

SCENE FIVE:
This scene takes place in the same gothic living room that represents the Underworld. Amelius is standing in front of Zeus and Hades.

AMELIUS
(Pleading) I’ll do anything. I beg of you, let me come back.

ZEUS
I gave you fair warning Amelius. The banishment stands.

AMELIUS
(Looks at Hades) Father please, do something…

HADES
No. You must face what you have brought upon them.

AMELIUS
But Artemis cast the spell.
ZEUS
And for that, she is grieving deeply. She will not speak to anyone nor will she eat.
You put her in the condition to create such irreversible chaos. You own this sin not her.

AMELIUS
(Begging) But must I be banished? There must be another way, please!

Persephone walks in and everyone becomes silent.
HADES
This decision if final Persephone.

PERSEPHONE
I wish to speak with him alone.

HADES
I do not advise you to speak to him.

PERSEPHONE
(Stern) You will leave me with my son.

Hades scowls and exits with Zeus.
AMELIUS
Mother, you will speak with them?

PERSEPHONE
I will not.

AMELIUS
…You also want me banished?

PERSEPHONE
You have banished yourself and I am ashamed of you.

AMELIUS
(Wounded) I meant no shame. I want to mend my sin.

PERSEPHONE
You cannot mend this. You cannot alter what this has done to those people and to me. I fear I have spoiled you. I have nursed you to become such a being.

Amelius begins to cry
AMELIUS
You cannot love such a son.
PERSEPHONE
I do love you. I look at you and see such goodness. How I longed for you to practice it. Hoping you could learn the ways of grace and confidence.

AMELIUS
(Gasping) I cannot bear to hear how I have disappointed you. I must go forward knowing that death and disappointment follow.

PERSEPHONE
Go forward knowing that I love you. Knowing that your actions henceforth are honorable.

Amelius is weak with emotions.
Persephone embraces him.
PERSEPHONE
I must leave you for it is time. Let my words reside in your heart and you will not suffer. (Exits)

The scenes ends as the lights dim on Amelius alone on stage broken and staring at the ceiling.
