Flowers.

Scene I

It's a sunny Christmas. Last night's snow gave the streets a light white glaze like sprinkles complete a doughnut. A MAN in a white coat holding flowers stood near the front door of an apartment building. He looked at the birds on the naked tree branches, dancing and singing, and smiled. With hope and confidence he stood. A car drove by.

MAN (V.O.)
Its be ten months now. I am glad that she didn't move. I wonder if she kept her hair long. She looked really great with long hair, cute and sophisticated. (smiled) This would be a great scene in a movie, like one of those romantic comedies.

The screen pulled back as MAN continued to wait in the side walk. Screen faded back.

Ten Months Ago.

Scene II

The same apartment at night is much more lonely. Only a window was led, giving off light to the empty street. Faint voices are heard, as if a couple is arguing.

Inside the apartment, a vase full of flowers sat on the kitchen counter. Shadows on the wall revealed that MAN was pacing around, WOMAN stood still. A slow romantic song played in the background, but neither of them were listening.

WOMAN
So what do you want? (annoyed) You know how much I missed you everyday, how I longed for your call or even a text message. That's why I feel you don't need me! And you blame me for making time for my friends?! Well if you treat me as worthy as your friends, I guess I don't have to be! (holding tears inside)

MAN
(frustrated but holding it in) You know how I spent my time, how little close friends I have. That's why I had to hold on to them... I'm leaving soon for another job. I won't be able to hang out with them like that anymore!

WOMAN
(bursted in small dose) I guess you didn't have a problem with me not at your side. Heh... How much do I mean to you anyways?

MAN
I care about you! But, everything is going right now. I don't know what to do... or even what I want... (sigh) What's happening to me?

MAN (V.O.)
What I really wanted to say was that she will be with me for the rest of our lives, so its not as urgent...

WOMAN
(calm) It's okay you don't know what's happening to you... I guess people change a little bit everyday without noticing. (getting more upset) But who knows how many more phases you are going to go through? (angrier) Are you going to push people that care about you away every time you go through a phase? (burst out) It's like you suddenly decided didn't play enough!

MAN
(frustrated) Look! I'm not like you! I don't have friends asking me to hang out with them every day. I don't have classmates asking me out to movies. This is important to me, okay?!

MAN (V.O.)
And I'm so sorry...

WOMAN
(held back) It's understandable you want to spend more time with friends now... But you should really learn how to balance the attention you give. In the future, you will still have to share your attention to different things.

MAN
(calmed down, feeling guilty) Yeah... I know.

WOMAN slowly makes to the kitchen. She grabbed the vase and walked to the sink to change the water. Neither person spoke as she continued her task and the music played.

MAN (V.O.)
I only realized later that she was crying.

As she put the flowers back into the vase, she walked slowly to the counter. She put down the vase and closed her eyes.

WOMAN
(concluding) I can't be with you right now. I don't want to keep bothering you with my jealousy and this is the only way I won't bother you and will keep me from freaking out. Heh, I know doing that might seem immature, but I'm really too attached to you, and that's bad.

MAN (V.O.)
And I was too scared about losing her...

WOMAN
You were a bad boyfriend to me, and I don't think I will ever forgive you. It's not that easy to forgive someone that meant something to you.

MAN (V.O.)
It's not that easy to forgive oneself either...

WOMAN
(trying to be cheerful) Be nice to your next girlfriend. If you want to find true love you should learn first to be less selfish... Real love for me should be selfless.

MAN
(finally recovered from shock) Wait, ... what are you saying? I know I am still just find what I want... Sometimes I want something like mad, sometimes I just want to take a break from it --

WOMAN
(interrupting) You think you are the only one that is that way? There is a quote: “The trick in life is not getting what you want, but wanting it after you get it.” You know relationships aren't perfect, why do you seem to forget that so often?!

MAN
(frustrated) Ha, that is a good quote. All I know is that feelings sometimes fade and needs rekindling, its what you do then that determines the fate of the relationship.

WOMAN
(a little upset) It's true that feelings fade and come back. But if you don't take responsibility when they fade, what do you expect the other person do?

MAN (V.O.)
Responsibility...

WOMAN
... The times I've spent with you are filled much more with unhappiness than happiness. Because I love you, so I persuaded myself to be happy... We should never have dated. We could have been best friends. But its too late for that now.

The two people stood silently. The scene faded black as the song in the background came to an end.

Scene III

MAN (V.O.)
I am so sorry for who I was and what I did. I've spent all this time finding out what I want. And I want you. I've quit my old job and got a job back here again. It's all worth it if you can be with me again. Please, if you have a tiny bit of feelings for me left, however little, give me another chance to make you happy again. I won't be jealous at little things. I won't get upset when you spend time with friends. I will quietly leave when you want some time alone. I will call you every single day and tell you how special you are to me for the rest of my life. I will do it all. It's Christmas, a time to spend with the one you love. And I love you.

The screen fades back to the sunny Christmas day, as MAN still waiting for WOMAN.

MAN (V.O.)
(smiles) I can't remember how many times I've practiced that speech.

MAN caught the sound of the apartment door opening and advanced toward the door. He smiled as he saw the one he's waiting for. However, the smile quickly faded as another man followed WOMAN out of the door. The two kissed deeply as they closed the door behind them. They giggled at each other and walked the other way from MAN, in each other's arms.

MAN stood motionlessly. It took the noise of another car passing by to break him out of the trance. He turned around and walked away from the apartment door. As he passed by a sidewalk trash can, he tossed the flowers that weren't meant to be given. Fades black.

MAN (V.O.)
(sarcastically) Ha ha.

Credits rolled.
