A Midwinter Night's Drive

By casvellon

Night creeps on over and into the back of my car
Revealing, releasing the bruised little children we are
Dealing in secrets and secondhand dreams,
we instinctively run at the first sign of losing our ground
and the way
is unclear

Restless and reeling from memories peeling away
Paint cans and painkillers, signs of another bad day
Holes in my belly grow louder and larger,
exposing the cracks in my old body's armor,
and anyone other than you makes it harder to see
that the road
is always unclear

Head-heavy screaming and hunger pangs cut me in two
One half's moved on but the other still thinks it needs you
If I roll up the windows and try not to breathe in
This wound won't consume me and maybe stop bleeding

I'm tired of being tired of being tired of being tired of seeing you

But the road
is just never clear

Night creeps on over and into the back of my car...
