The first chapter of the Fallen by the Wayside Collaboration
Fallen by the Wayside - chapter 1
Int. Alan's room. evening
Alan sits on a chair in the corner of the room staring at the tv in
the other corner of the room. We hear it but don't see it. He reaches
over and picks up the remote control and presses a button. The tv
sound stops. He stares at the wall for a moment. Then we cut to later
where he's reading a book. He closes the book and tosses it on the
bed. He stares at the wall some more. We cut to him playing the guitar
and singing. He plays a verse of a song then we cut to him staring at
the wall again. We cut to him drinking a beer. He finishes it, then
exits his room.
Int. The Kitchen. moments later.
Alan opens the refrigerator door and pulls another beer out. He opens
it and chugs the entire beer. He tosses the beer bottle in the trash
can and gets another one from the refrigerator.
Int. The living room. Moments later.
In the room there are at least five guys sitting around watching tv.
No one stops to look at Alan as he walks in front of them to the front
door. Alan stops and turns back, but no one notices. He exits through
the front door.
Ext. Alan's house. moments later.
Alan steps out in to the front yard and opens his beer. He stares at
the sky then takes a sip. He walks to his car and reaches in to the
glove compartment. He pulls out a cell phone. He opens the phone. NO
calls, NO texts. He returns to the front door of the house and enters.
Int. Alan's room. moments later.
Alan is sitting on his bed with his back to us. He takes a long sip of
his beer and puts it down on the end table. He picks up his cell phone
and scrolls down to a name. "Emily from the past." He presses send. It
rings for a few moments then a voicemail message kicks in. Beep.
OH, um. Hiiii... it's Alan. I don't even really know if you remember
me...almost. Uh.It's been a bit. A million years at least. Uh. and i
ummm. well i guess i just need to say what i called for or hangup. I
just had a strange revelation about this life and i decided i'm going
to start over. Firstly i'm going to tell all the people the things
that i should have said a long time ago when everything was really
happening. Starting with you, i'm not good at social interaction, this
phone call is terrifying me. i uhh. i think i may have been in love
with you once. or something close to it. I know i never said anything
or asked you out. i should have. but once again i'm terrible with
social interaction. My brain doesn't work correctly. i just wanted
tell you that i had feelings for you a million years. None of this
will have bearing on our current realities, but i it's helping me
through the start over process. I should say more, but forgot most of
what i wanted to say. this sounded way better when i was telling you
this in my head. ummm. Call me back? nah. or yeah. no well. Whatever
you feel like doing i guess. God i'm creepy. Goodbye, answering
machine, because it's not even you.
He closes the phone. He sits for a few moments. He runs his hands
through his hair. He leans over and grabs the beer from the endtable.
He looks to his right.
