I think we're afraid of the dark because we are afraid of the unknown.
After all, when you're facing blackness, not being able to see a foot in front of your face, how are you supposed to process that? You tell yourself there's nothing there - and that's most likely true - but that quiet little voice in your head tells you that there could always be something. And no matter how hard you try, sometimes you can't ignore that.
