When you look at me
what do you see?
I am not trapped here,
And while you are busy with your assumptions
Of my character
You miss the tiger that lives in my chest.
What you see as fatty lines are really tiger stripes
They show my life between them
The courage it took to tell someone
NO YOU WILL NOT LABEL ME AS LESSER…
I will not take your remediated courses because you say I’m not smart
I was in honors courses when you were still working your way through your ABC’s
You miss so much with your prejudice and stereotypical bullshit.
I will no longer base my worth on your approval.
I will no longer eat my feelings nor will I starve them to make you like me.
You will not turn to me as I hold the door open FOR YOU MOTHERFUCKER and look at me like
You did ME a favor.
I am a daughter.
A friend and wife.
I am not metal and rubber and a lesser intellect wrapped in a sad fat girls body.
I am me. I am a person.
Maybe next time you’ll leave your assumptions at the door…
And see me.
