Rainbow Colored Gum

Cover Image

When I was 8 or 9, there was this girl who lived at the military base, just under us, but to the left.  My dad knew her dad, her mom knew my mom, everyone knew her brother was a bully, and so on.  THEY were alright.  SHE was a a pain.

She loved to show off her new things and whine about everything.  She went out to play whenever she wanted, and I would always have to ask for permission, which usually didn't last long.  I didn't always care because by 6, Power Rangers would come on anyway.

Once, she came our Carousel Playground and started showing off all of this stuff her brother had sent her from some place in Europe.  She had a firstfull of the most colorful gum any of us had ever seen, and she didn't want to share.  One of the pieces dropped at one point, and I made to stealthily pick it up, put it in my mouth, and chew when I thought no one was looking.  It tasted pretty good.

She must have been watching me from the corner of her eye the whole time.  "I saw you,"  she said in front of everyone.  "Why would you eat it? It's dirty."

I had never been so embarassed.
