Virgen de Ciudad Juarez

By B_Butts_Illustrator

A merge of classic religious imagry and Mexican folk art influence. The "caledera" facepaint represents death, as in the mexican tradition of Dia de Los Muertos... This piece is in responce to the numerous untimely deaths of young factory workers (women workers) who are brutalized and left dead in the desert of northern Mexico in and around the City of Juarez, directly across the border from El Paso, Texas. Most of the women killed work for factories that are American owned, but opperated in Mexico. The murders of these women often go uninvestigated, because of the families financial situation, as well as corruption within the law enforcement community. These deaths that have been occuring in alarming numbers since the mid 90s, have recently been overshadowed by even more violence and death from the drug war in Mexico, whose claim on life does not limit itself to young women.
