I Have Kept Things
After Edith L. Tiempo’s “Bonsai”
I have kept things—
The laced handkerchief
From Dad’s coat pocket,
The opened pack of Lucky Strikes
Under Mom’s pillow—
Stowed in big blue bins
That are emptied every week.
If love is kept in boxes
Or slits in hollow posts for all time,
Why then would you offer me
A tie, a money bill, an Indian shawl
That even then are irretrievable?
That love has been scaled
Down to a cupped hand’s size;
The big blue bins that find
Their way back every week
Wait faithfully for more things
I trust them to keep.
