The roller coaster climbs the hill.
Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.
Higher and higher it goes.
Straight ahead are the clouds in the endless blue sky.
But down below is the ground, waiting for whoever doesn’t make it.

The roller coaster climbs the hill.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
The hill is steep, and we are very far from where we started.
The higher we go, the more I want to look down.
The further we are from home, the more I long for it.

The roller coaster climbs the hill.
Tick. Tick.
Air whips around us.
A cool breeze becomes a treacherous wind.
We continue looking down, but also look up to see how close
we are to the crest of the hill.

The roller coaster slows.
For that one moment, we are suspended high above the earth.
Everything spreads out for us to see.
But I am frightened and overwhelmed.
I close my eyes
and miss it.

The roller coaster speeds down the hill.
My eyes remain clamped shut.
I feel the jerks and tugs of the coaster, but am blind to the sights.
I don’t scream; I don’t laugh; I don’t smile.
I sit with my eyes jammed shut
not willing to look around.

The roller coaster stops.
The bars lift, and we all unbuckle.
We leave the ride to make room for all who were waiting after us.
We move on.
Except for me.
I’m still stuck staring up at the hill.
There were so many things to see up there: Places, people, things.
But I closed my eyes
and missed it.
