A Relationship in A Word

By fallingalice

FADE IN:

INT. KITCHEN.

SHAWN, a young man in his late 20s, sits across the kitchen table from his parents.  His father raises his bushy eyebrows hopefully.  His mother stares at SHAWN, eager and waiting--her enthusiasm is in danger of getting on the upholstery.  She clutches a business card that has a number scrawled on the back in purple ink.

SHAWN

(sighing heavily in defeat)

Yes.

INT. RESTAURANT.

SHAWN and his BLIND DATE sit across from one another in complete silence.  SHAWN opens his mouth in an attempt to make small talk, but no sound comes out.  He spends a moment gaping like a goldfish before surrendering to the silence.

In an attempt to be polite, SHAWN'S DATE gestures with her hand and opens her mouth.  She, too, is at a loss for words.  They simply have nothing to say to one another.

In the background, a similar awkward dance is occurring between KELLY and her DATE.  KELLY excuses herself and is either walking towards the restroom or the side exit...she passes the restroom.  She pauses at the side exit, noting the sign that hangs from the door.

C.U. SIGN

The sign has large red text that reads, "Alarm will sound if door is opened."

SHAWN appears behind her, apparently with the same intention.  He grins.

SHAWN

Yes?

They push the door at the same time.

EXT. KELLY'S FRONT DOOR-LATER THAT NIGHT.

KELLY looks down, considering SHAWN'S question.  She thoroughly enjoys the fact that he bothered to ask.

KELLY

Yes.

SHAWN leans in to say goodnight.

INT. LIVING ROOM.

The couch is surrounded by pizza boxes, chips, and pop cans.  SHAWN and KELLY, however, are nowhere near the couch.  They are both hovering inches from the TV screen in complete silence, clutching at each others' team jerseys, and praying to the football gods in the final seconds of the game.  Then suddenly...the gods have been merciful.

BOTH

(embracing)

YES!!!

INT. BATHROOM MIRROR.

SHAWN has stopped brushing his teeth mid-stroke.  KELLY is waiting for his answer, wearing the most unflattering pair of jeans to ever find their way onto a woman's ass.

SHAWN

(closing his eyes and anticipating the aftermath)

Yes.

INT. LIVING ROOM.

Several couples are gathered around the coffee table, playing a "get-together" game.  KELLY just finished reading her answer.  Everyone, including SHAWN, laughs.  He makes a disbelieving face at her.

KELLY

(teasing)

Yes.

KELLY pokes him in the ribs to punctuate her remark, and he kisses her shoulder.

EXT. PARK-DAY.

KELLY sit on a park bench.  SHAWN is kneeling in front of her, looking at her hopefully.  KELLY'S hands are covering her mouth and there are tears in her eyes.  She begins to nod her head.

KELLY

Yes!

FADE OUT.
